Gallery 7-1 - Unusual Images

Sometimes a scene recommends itself for special and unusual treatment.  With most of our work, we strive for exceptional beauty or an exceptional mood that enhances the meaning of the image.  Still, sometimes an image evokes the need to leap beyond the usual constraints into abstract art and unusual visions of reality.  These scenes are always real, sometimes hyper-real. and they have been taken to the level of a dream.  We've been very sparing in this gallery.  Dreams are the hardest images to capture and we've selected only the best.  Take a deep breath, and then take a close look.   Later, be sure and check our other galleries as well; they overlap a little.

Dreams don't always come in small sizes.  Some images in this gallery are available principally  in large format (13 x 19" to 24 x 48" paper size--although individual image sizes vary somewhat).

For your convenience, we've placed only a few images on each page of this gallery.  When you are ready, go to page 2 or 3 of this Gallery, or use the tags at the top to view other galleries on our site and place your order.

Clear Passage

Clear Passage©.  You are walking up a steep hillside ready to explore the structure on the top.  Out of breath, you come to a cave, seemingly the entrance to an enormous cavern.  With curiosity, you wander in and suddenly arrive at a patch of lovely green garden with yucca and flowering agave.  The gate is open; welcome.  Edition size:  49 small; 34 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Cloud Awakening

Cloud Awakening© shows us early morning at the top of a giant Saguaro cactus in full bloom.  During the night, the flowers were visited and pollinated by moths and bats.  Soon, as they awaken, it will be the turn of the Sonoran Desert’s native doves to enjoy the magnificence of these wonderful flowers.  By early afternoon, they will all be gone.  Edition size:  49 small; 19 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

Coming Down the Mountain

Coming Down the Mountain©.  Donkeys are the favored mode of transportation  when the mountains grow steep.  In this case they are serving both as practical basic transportation and as pack animals.  A car or truck might be able to bump down the same stepped roadway, but it seems unlikely to be in good enough shape afterward to return to the top.  Edition size:  49 small; 39 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

Foggy Day

Foggy Day©.  A foggy day is memorable in the Sonoran Desert.  This one is quite real—a scene outside our studios on Quail Lane (sorry, but the quail were no-shows).  The mountains looming in the background are well above the fog and bathed in daylight.  The edge of the fog is not far away, and provides a striking contrast between the dark outlines of the nearby cholla and the more distant saguaro.  Edition size:  29 small; 24 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Heart of the Desert

Heart of the Desert©, like true love, is a rare find.  Nonetheless, on rare occasion, the pad of a prickly pear does grow into a recognizably well-loved shape.  Here a real opuntia cactus seems to bring the heart of the Sonoran desert into our homes, complete with a faint rainbow to emphasize its warmth of feeling.  Edition size:  39 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.
