Gallery 5-2 - Cactus Flowers and Prickly Things Only

Can you hug a cactus?  Many of them seem cute, almost huggable.   And some even have cute names, like "teddy bear cholla", or "queen of the night".   Their blossoms are often magnificent, with a riot of colors and shapes varying from the incredibly ornate to the simply improbable.  We  feature some of them here, together with agaves, aloes, yuccas and other pointed plants.  We recommend that you hug just the art.  Both you and the prickly things will be happier.  Digitography is made for flowers and plants.  Take a look.  Be sure and check our other galleries as well; they overlap a little.

For your convenience, we've placed only a few images on each page of this gallery.  When you are ready, go to page 1 or 3 in this gallery, or use the tags at the top to view other galleries on our site and place your order.

Family Resemblance

Family Resemblance© shows nature’s artwork.  Here, three different colors of trichocereus are each caught in full bloom at sunrise.  Ranging in size from 3 to 5 inches in diameter and in depth, trichocereus flowers are often as large as the small cacti bearing them.  See them while you can.  With hot southwest desert days, these beauties bloom explosively and are often gone by noon.  Edition size:   29 large; also created in canvas with gallery wrap and straight edges:  no limit; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

◄ Field of Flowers

Field of Flowers© is an island in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona.  It is spring, and the gentle winter rains have done their part.  Suddenly wildflowers are joined are joined by the blossoms of prickly pear in announcing an exciting time of growth and abundance on the spare desert floor.  Edition size:  39 small; 15 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

◄ First Blush

First Blush© is an improbably enormous, four-blossomed pink trichocereus topping a cactus barely a foot tall.  Trichocereus bloom in the early morning during late spring just before the weather turns from warm to hot.  This one is open to early morning light, no doubt awaiting a friendly moth or bee to sample its ample nectar.  The branch in front is a white-thorn acacia.  Edition size:  39 small; 19 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

Garden Dragon©.  This could be a bug’s eye-view of a gigantic prehistoric creature looming suddenly from behind the foliage.  But this little lizard is really only a few inches long and is the friendly sort, living among the cactus flowers for protection.  And not coincidentally, the garden dragon is no doubt enjoying the snacks that flutter toward him.  Edition size:  39 small; 19 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Gathering Inspiration

Gathering Inspiration© seems to describe this Gila woodpecker as it rests on the saguaro.  A monsoon storm appears to be blowing in, and with the increased moisture there will be many opportunities to discover a tasty meal from the many holes in the saguaros and ironwoods throughout the Sonoran desert.  Edition size:  39 small; 19 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Great White

Great White© is an enormous white trichocereus topping a cactus barely a foot tall.  Trichocereus bloom in the late spring just before the weather turns from warm to hot.  This one was fortunate to be in partial shade beneath a mesquite, no doubt awaiting a friendly bee to sample its ample nectar.  Without the shade, the delicate and fragrant bloom would fade away by noon in the heat.  Edition size:  39 small; 19 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.
