Gallery 5-1 - At the Water's Edge

Much as we love the deserts and the mountains, we also feel irresistibly attracted to water.  The water's edge is exciting, producing an ever-changing discontinuity between textures and forms.  Lighting changes as we near water, and the reflections, sounds, and rhythmic crashing of waves all blend into subconscious pleasure.  In this gallery we pay tribute to the excitement, pleasure and romance of the water's edge.   It suggests something eternal in our nature, and yet evokes immediate pleasure.  You will find most ocean, lake and river scenes here.  In every case, the scenes are real, very real, and it is the art of digitography that has brought them alive.  Be sure and check our other galleries as well; they overlap a little.

For your convenience, we've placed only a few images on each page of this gallery.  When you are ready, go to page 2 in this Gallery, or use the tags at the top to view other galleries on our site and place your order.

Desert Reflections

Desert Reflections© appear in the three small pools left over from a recent rain in this almost dry wash.  The reflections are of the sky and mountains in the Sedona area of Arizona.  Here the low Sonoran Desert runs out against the colorful mountains and ridges of the high Mogollon Rim stretching to the windblown Colorado Plateau.  Edition size:  39 small; 19 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

First Crossing

First Crossing© is a scene that might be found anywhere in the west.  Here the snow is still on the mountains, as a mare and her foal ford the spring runoff.  Typically, grass begins to grow well before leaves appear on the trees, assuring the pair of sufficient food near the river’s edge.   Edition size:  39 small; 24 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Forest Stream in Fall

Forest Stream in Fall© is a little stream in the southern part of Arizona’s Galiuro Mountains.  This area is protected by the Nature Conservancy as one of the world’s most lovely (but vanishing) habitats.  Look closely and imagine the many wonderful varieties of animal and plant life.  Edition size:  39 small (24" high-not matted; larger sizes by request); artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Looking Sharp

Looking Sharp©.  A blue heron moves stealthily across the marsh.  Few ripples arise as the hunt continues.  What’s for dinner?  He’s looking out sharply for the small fish or occasional crustaceans below the surface.  Meanwhile, a little breeze shifts his reflection back and forth.  Watch carefully now; it looks like he’s caught something.  Edition size:  29 small; 29 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth

Reflection

Reflection© shows a single blue heron that has taken charge of a small island in a lake near Wilcox, Arizona.  The herons return to the region annually to mate, enjoy the fine winter weather, and do a little fishing in their spare time.  Meanwhile, this particular one cuts a proud, iconic figure.  Edition size:  49 small; 24 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Sabino

Sabino© is a canyon cutting through some of the most rugged parts of Arizona’s Santa Catalina Mountains.  At times, the little stream flowing lazily through the canyon swells into a massive river.  But between monsoons, the stream nourishes a riot of plant and wildlife.  This would be a good time for your hike up the wonderful canyon.  Edition size:  39 small; 35 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.
