Gallery 10-3 - Retired for a Spell--But Still Great!

Well, heck, we've loved these scenes so much that we selected most of them as particularly special in the first year we operated the Studios.  But it was time for a shuffle so that we could feature some new work!  We've moved these images out of our regular first 8 galleries, and we no longer feature them at our shows.  We still love them.  We hope you will too.  And someday when we get really lazy about doing new work, we'll bring these back.

Meanwhile, you can still order them.  We don't keep them in stock right now, but we will get your order to you within a week.  One last thing:  because they aren't featured, you can buy two for the price of one.  That is, the posted price is for 1 of the images in Gallery 10--but you can also select any other image in this gallery for free (same size or smaller)

For your convenience, we've placed only a portion of our images on each page of this gallery.  When you are ready, go to pages 1 (A-C), 2 (D-F), 4 (K-M), 5 (N-R), 6 (S), or 7 (T-Z) in this Gallery, go to  Galleries 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or  8 , Check Prices, or place your order:   Go to Order Blank       E-mail to Quail Lane Studios.

                                                        Go Down the Mountain

Go Down the Mountain© tells what you have heard, and what few have seen. On the mountain-tops surrounding even the most severe desert, spring rains sometimes bring a carpet of flowers eager to test themselves against the elements. The image looks south from a range in Nevada’s Great Basin.  Edition size:  89 small; 9 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Gone to Seed

Gone to Seed© features a Sonoran desert bush that has literally gone to seed, with the seeds waiting only for a breeze to float away and create new life in some new valley.  Above circles a red-tailed hawk, perhaps hoping that the creatures that depend on eating the seeds might make themselves just a little more visible in a careless moment.  Edition size:  39 small; 15 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Go the Other Way

Go the Other Way© seems like the best advice we can offer.  This path through a tunnel at California’s Pinnacles National Monument balances boulders precariously overhead all the while inviting the adventurous to tempt fate.  They have earthquakes here.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Good Morning

Good Morning© hides a wonderful complexity of colors. If you get up just at sunrise, pale yellow flowers may enjoy the reddish early light. Many cactus varieties are largely night blooming and this is the only time to appreciate them without being too sleepy to notice their beauty.  Edition size:  89 small; 9 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Grand Opening

Grand Opening© is one of the largest and most distinguished hibiscus flowers that we’ve seen.  Caught here shortly after unfurling, it seemingly became more majestic and beautiful as the hours went by.  Don’t take your eyes from it; let it steal your heart.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood

Growing in a Hard Place

Growing in a Hard Place© is a demonstration of survival skills for these little claret cup hedgehogs.  So far as we can tell, they grow on rock alone, with little soil, and no ground moisture beyond what they can salvage from the lichens competing for their own hold on the granite cliff face.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Guard Duty

Guard Duty© has been assigned to this group of turtles.  They chose to carry out their assignment atop a flat rock giving them a wonderful vantage point at this little lake.  Every so often, one slips into the water savoring a swim in the day’s warmth and, no doubt, a fish or two.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Hanging Around

Hanging Around© could refer to the rope-like arms of this cactus draped from its bit of rock-enclosed soil.  But we think it refers to the wonderfully iridescent blossoms springing weightlessly from the arms.  Although many cacti have broad flowers, long tubular cacti seem to be flush with out-reaching tubular flowers, that are not readily accessible to bees, but are ideal for the desert’s many long-tongued moths and humming birds.  Edition size:  29 small; 15 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood

Hangin' On

Hangin’ On© seems the best way to describe this bronc rider at the rodeo.  He needs only a few seconds, but those seconds must seem like a lifetime.  He’s not riding Old Paint.  His horse is determined to show him who is the boss of the rodeo.  But maybe this rider will beat the odds.  Edition size:  49 small; 29 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Harvest Time

Harvest Time© finds a small bird examining the lusciously soft flower ball of an acacia tree.  We’re not sure whether the bird is there to harvest the nectar, or the tiny bugs drawn by the nectar.  Perhaps the bird is merely scouting in advance or staking out the territory for when the acacia seeds begin to ripen.  Edition size:  39 small; 15 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Hidden Bridge

Hidden Bridge© crosses the narrow neck of a lake in a plantation outside Charleston, South Carolina.  The combination of the bridge’s reflection and the soft Spanish moss induce a feeling of satisfied freedom.  You can stay here; you can live here.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Hold On

Hold On© shows us the tenacity of a single little barrel cactus clinging to a tiny space between a sheer wall and a sharp drop into a canyon. Life exists here…and does well enough to grow and flourish. So long as it continues to hold on.  Edition size:  89 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Into the Volcano

Into the Volcano© is a view from the rim of Haleakala in Maui.  From that altitude, the quality of colors in the sky change, and the reflected light shifts across the smaller cinder cones as the sun moves toward the horizon.  The green is grass, the other colors--the blues, purples and reds--shift constantly.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

Judgment

Judgment© is just that. The scene is Devil’s Postpile National Monument, a remarkable cliff face formed by molten lava, crystallizing as it cooled. The crystals are incredibly tall, five-sided columns. From time to time, they break from the cliff, forming the jagged pile at the bottom.  Edition size:  89 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Just Born

Just Born©.  We didn’t see the hatch, but judging from the sleepy-eyed chick and the attentions of its mom, this little peacock can’t be more than an hour or so old.  His older sister in the upper left is already lively and checking the situation for a bug or two that mom might have missed.  Edition size:  39 small; 11 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

Just Fishing

Just Fishing© is an iconic extension of our minds.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to take a day—or a month—off and just sit by the sea and fish?  Why not?  We’d like to join this fellow enjoying the sun on  his arched rock north of Santa Barbara on the California coast.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Just One Tulip

Just One Tulip© doesn’t quite tell the story.  There were thousands blooming at the same time at Tulip Hill, California.  But there was just one, that stood by itself and was special both for the loveliness of its bloom, and for its open receptiveness to a careful touch.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood
