Gallery 10-2 - Retired for a Spell--But Still Great!

Well, heck, we've loved these scenes so much that we selected most of them as particularly special in the first year we operated the Studios.  But it was time for a shuffle so that we could feature some new work!  We've moved these images out of our regular first 8 galleries, and we no longer feature them at our shows.  We still love them.  We hope you will too.  And someday when we get really lazy about doing new work, we'll bring these back.

Meanwhile, you can still order them.  We don't keep them in stock right now, but we will get your order to you within a week.  One last thing:  because they aren't featured, you can buy two for the price of one.  That is, the posted price is for 1 of the images in Gallery 10--but you can also select any other image in this gallery for free (same size or smaller)

For your convenience, we've placed only a portion of our images on each page of this gallery.  When you are ready, go to pages 1 (A-C), 3 (G-J), 4 (K-M), 5 (N-R), 6 (S), or 7 (T-Z) in this Gallery, go to  Galleries 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or  8 , Check Prices, or place your order:   Go to Order Blank       E-mail to Quail Lane Studios.

Retired Images D - F

Dawn

Dawn© seems at first to be in the tradition of Japanese watercolor. This scene, captured along the Mendocino coast in northern California, shows the interaction of the classic Greek elements …earth, air, fire, and water. We think the ancients would have approved.  Edition size:  89 small; 9 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Day's Finest

Day’s Finest© is a vibrantly colored day lily.  There will be more, of course, and the buds show that they are ready to take over in the days to come.  Meanwhile, this day lily is not only the finest of the day, but the finest we have ever seen.  Reach out while there is time and enjoy its fragrance.  Edition size:  29 small; 11 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

 Desert Mirage

Desert Mirage© irresistibly beckons the serious hiker to the mountains of the Northwest’s Cascade Range.  In the spring, the washes run with cool snow melt, while the banks are just beginning to wake green from a hard winter.  The remains of winter glisten from the mountain tops.   Edition size:  10 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood

Diamond in the Rough

Diamond in the Rough© is a desert diamond—in this case a Santa Rita cactus in bloom on the Sonoran desert floor in Arizona.  The flower is magnificent, and often referred to as a “cactus rose” by locals.  And the diamond?  Yes, it is here, a jewel of multiple facets.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth

Distant Rumble

Distant Rumble© reminds us that we are not the most powerful force on our planet.  The boulders piled here, outside Palm Springs, show the raw force of nature.  Did it happen in a cataclysmic instant or as a steady change over time?  When will it happen next?   Edition size:  89 small; 9 large; artist: Sherry Shamroth

Down by the Water's Edge

Down by the Water’s Edge© tells a magical story. There is a longing to be near the sea, and yet not to be part of it. One can watch the changes in weather and tides, without being drawn fully into them. Here a family rests on the seawall at Lake Pontchartrain, enjoying the monsoonal sunset.  Edition size:  89 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Down to the Sea

Down to the Sea© showcases Northern California’s rocky cliffs as they drop into the Pacific.  The haze evident throughout this image, and most obvious around the frame, is neatly symbolic of the overwhelming breath of the ocean as it meets the coastline.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth

   Dream Escape

Dream Escape© combines the qualities of our fondest dreams.  The mountain peak resides in Tahiti, and we recall its hidden spells fondly.  The other quality is a light density contour mapping that transparently kisses the image and creates a visionary dream map for sailing us there.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood

Essential Light

Essential Light© is a stained glass window seen from the inside of a cathedral in Lisbon. The cathedral is impressive, representing the work of many artisans over decades. Even more impressive is the contrast of the dark rough textures of the interior stone walls with the detail and light of this window.  Edition size:  89 small; 9 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Evening's Last Ray

Evening's Last Ray© focuses on a single tuft of desert broom on a hillside.  The light is fading and only the broom remains lit, for an instant, before the sun disappears below the rim of mountains surrounding this little hill.  Edition size:  89 small, 9 large:  artist Laurie Larwood.

Fading Light

Fading Light© shows the long shadows of unseen mountains on the desert hills northeast of Las Vegas.  The scrub sage, like the rocks and the central mountain itself, has all been turned golden by the light.  Very soon, that will fade, and a quiet darkness will be broken only by the coyotes.   Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

Fall of the King

Fall of the King© shows the result of growing too successful. Winds and lightning are more likely to strike down the giant saguaro cactus of the Sonoran desert than age alone is to cripple it. The king falls, and a new giant to the upper right prepares to take its place.  Edition size:  89 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

Fishing Season Opens

Fishing Season Opens© and these fifteen are ready to head out into the harbor of San Carlos, Sonora to see what they can catch.  Each boat is already full of birds, and even if there is room for a fisherman or two, there certainly is no extra room for the fish.  Where will they put the fish?  This is something that only the pelicans know for sure.  Edition size:  29 small; 15 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth.

Fishing the San Joaquin

Fishing the San Joaquin© takes place on a bright day high in the Sierra Nevada range. Eventually the San Joaquin will slake the thirst of California’s Central Valley, but today it holds interest for only two—the fisherman and his quarry.  Edition size:  89 small; 9 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

 Flowering Trumpet

Flowering Trumpet© reminds us of a bugle aimed heavenward.  The flower is a rarity:  a double purple “sacred” datura.  We think the sacred part was named more for the hallucinogenic effects of the datura’s seeds than for its majestic attitude.  Still, these seem to be trumpeting sweet notes.  Edition size:  49 small; 19 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood

   Forbidden Fruit

Forbidden Fruit© is the flower of a light blue “sacred” datura.  Although sacred to some, datura is worshipped with rather than toward—its seeds are poisonous and hallucinogenic.  Also known as jimson weed, datura is reviled by ranchers for its effects on hungry cattle.  Edition size:  39 small; 15 large; artist:  Sherry Shamroth

Forest in the City

Forest in the City© appears at one level to be a cluster of sky scrapers, surrounded by patches of blue water—not unlike Manhattan. At another level the image has the soft textured feel of a thick carpet.  In fact, this is a unique treatment of a clump of moss hanging from a forest branch in Hawaii.  Edition size:  10 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood

Formal Portrait

Formal Portrait© is the entryway to Yosemite Valley seen from above.  The time is late spring, and the mountains are still snow-capped, while many of the waterfalls already flow freely, and the evergreens are already beginning their seasonal stretch.  Half-dome is in the center background.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.

From the Bottom of the Canyon

From the Bottom of the Canyon© is the view across a small stream outside Palm Springs.  The palms seem secure.  Nonetheless the bare facing of the rock and the depth of the canyon cut by the stream testify that, every so often, the area is swept by a torrent of water and rock cascading from above.  Edition size:  49 small; 11 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood

From the Garden

From the Garden©, but not our garden.  This wonderful gold, purple and cyan iris stands alone is a lovely garden in Arizona.  Each iris is different and the petals must seem as an exquisite interwoven puzzle to a wandering bee.  But the unique quality to this iris is the astonishing combination of striking color with finely-textured detail.  Can you smell its bouquet?  Edition size:  29 small; 15 large; artist:  Laurie Larwood.
